The two winning People’s Choice designs were submitted for both sanitary sewer and storm sewer manhole covers. Votes for the over 1,100 submissions were cast both electronically, through the Ironcladart.ca website, and in person, at the Ironclad Art Exhibition at the Interurban Gallery.
In total, there were 17,149 votes cast for 963 different submissions.
The People’s Choice awards complement the peer jury process that selected manhole cover designs by Nigel Dembicki for storm and Andrew (Enpaauk) Dexel for sanitary. These designs will go through a process of casting and fabrication and begin to appear on city streets in about two years. The previous two designs from 2007 by Jen Weih and Susan Point/Kelly Cannell can be found throughout the city. The two designs help to highlight the City of Vancouver’s major project to separate storm and sanitary sewers. They are intended to make citizens more award of the important role separated storm and sanitary sewers play in keeping local waters healthy.
