Public Art is artwork of any medium that is most often site specific within a community. These works can blend in, stand out, give context to the surrounding it’s in, tell a story or bring people together.
Who decides what artwork is eligible to be installed and how do artists become involved? While it’s true that anyone can install their artwork within their communities, certain artists have the opportunity to get their work commissioned and executed with the support of their municipality. This is done through an application process which involves juries and committees. In Vancouver, there is both a civic program, and a private sector program. Once call for submissions are sent out, artists from all mediums and backgrounds are welcome to apply.
